An exceptional, near mint example of a Japanese Officer's WW-II Samurai sword complete with original leather scabbard case, and officer's sword knot. Please see all pictures.
The tang of the blade is marked on both sides, and the laquered top end of the scabbard also bears a marking. A friend of ours, versed in Japanese, translates the marks as follows; the label on the scabbard is that of "SEKI CUTLERY WORKS" The signature is "YOSHISHIGE" The other side is a date "SHOWA JU HACHI NEN" or the 18th year of the SHOWA era or 1943. The stamp on the tang is that of SEKI arsenal.
The blade is in excellent, original, untouched condition with excellent polish and temper line. There is a pin-head size rust spot about mid-blade on one side as shown in the pictures. The hilt and fittings retain 98% original finish with grip and wrapping also in excellent condition. The scabbard retains its original leather cover which is dry but retains 95% original surface with one tear below the eyelet section as shown in the pictures. The sword knot is excellent, colored blue and light golden brown (we are told this indicates the original owner was a captain or above).
This sword and a WW-II Japanese officer sword, which we have also listed, are fresh to the market having been found years ago in a Newport, RI estate and we presume they are WW-II bring-backs since many US Navy personnel served at the Newport Naval Base and retired here.
It would be difficult to up-grade this military Samurai sword.
